Bucas Grande: Experiencing the Other Side of Surigao del Norte

June 06, 2018

White sand, pristine waters, and natural wonders...all these and more await you at this island known for its enchanting coves, lagoons, and jellyfish sanctuary.

Bucas Grande, also known as the municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte is more laid-back compared to its neighboring island - the country’s surfing capital, Siargao. That doesn’t mean it lacks adventures, though. Whether you’re a thrill or chill seeker, you’ll definitely love this beautiful island getaway.

How to get there

If you’re coming from Davao City or other neighboring provinces, you can travel by land. From Davao, it would take about eight hours. Sunshine and I didn’t take this route, though.

Take a plane or if you're traveling from Manila, choose among Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and Air Asia. These airlines offer daily flights to Surigao City.

Take note: Many people mistake Surigao and Siargao as the same place. Make sure to click SURIGAO (SUG) not SIARGAO (IAO) if you’re booking online unless you’re planning to go to Siargao first.

From Surigao City airport, you can hire a van or ride a bus going to Hayanggabon Port in Claver. This trip will take about an hour. If you’re riding a bus it will cost you P120.

We arrived at the port around 2 pm and our ride was already waiting there. Check your hotel booking if it includes a charter boat.

Places of Interest and activities

If you want to snorkel, dive, explore caves, swim, or simply breathe in the beauty of nature, there’s always a place and something for you to do. Among the famous places of interest in the island include the following:

  • Sohoton Cove National Park
  • Jellyfish Sanctuary
  • Tiktikan Lake
  • Hagukan and Magkukuob Caves
  • Crystal Cave
  • Bolitas Cave
  • Bubon Group of Islets
  • Bubon Beach
  • Marka A Island
  • Isla Noah
  • Club Tara Resort
Gone was my obsession for spelunking since I had an accident, hence, exploring one - the Crystal cave - was enough. Of course, the Sohoton Cove National Park and the jellyfish sanctuary were in my must-see list.

I had most fun paddling around the island and discovering secluded beaches. For the likes of me, the next picture is already quite a feat.

Secluded beach across Club Tara. Still can't believe I only paddled my way to this spot and back to the hotel.
Where I stayed during this week-long vacation and my review of the resort will be up on my blog soon. For now, here's a picture of the place.
